Once again, it’s that time of the year when students pass out of schools and have to take that tough decision of making a profound choice after analysing the right career opportunities for themselves. While most of them already know what they have to do, there are many students who are perpetually in a dilemma about what career option to choose.
With the number of top career options in India being added almost every other day, it becomes all the more difficult to take a call. Therefore, it will be a wise thing if you’d take some advice from academic experts, for it will go a long way in establishing the right career path for you.
In an interview done with Mumbai messenger, Shaheen Khan, Director of CEDP Vocational Institute (Council of Education and Development Programmes Pvt Ltd) has provided the following suggestions to students.
What are the best career options in India available to students from Science, Commerce and Arts fields after passing Class 12th?
Students from Science, Commerce and Arts streams have the option of doing any diploma or certificate course. The courses are Paramedical, in which Pathology is a good option. Nursing Assistant course is in demand and has a 100% job guarantee. Diploma in Ophthalmic technology is one in which the person can work with doctors – someone who wants to pursue a career in medical and later can even opt for a bachelor’s degree. They are paid well, with salaries ranging from Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 30,000. There are even technician courses. Students with a Commerce background can pursue a career in Human Resource (HR). After completing the course, they can work in a consultancy or in an MNC or can even set-up their own business. They can even do financial accounting, as many companies need accountants. Students from Arts stream can do a Diploma in Hotel Management wherein the students work in Five-star hotels and can further do a BA degree in Hotel Management. There is even an MBA in hospitality.
Which are the trending career opportunities for students today?
Aviation is in a lot of demand and is picking up as one of the most sought after career options in India. Students who are interested can do a Diploma or a certificate course in the same. They can further enhance their qualification by doing MBA in Hospitality. Another booming career is Industrial Safety. All units, be it industries, hotels, hospitals or high-rise buildings, have openings in this field. You can work as a security manager, construction field supervisor, etc., and draw a salary of around Rs.30,000-Rs.40,000. Online Marketing is another career option that a lot of people are considering because of its huge demand. Solar Power Making industry will be a boom in the next 5 years. Therefore, students can look forward to finding a lot of opportunities in this field. Ayurvedic courses are generally ignored but it has a lot of scope. People can start their own wellness clinics. Setting up own business is also a popular career choice these days.
Which are the not-so-popular career options?
Very few people are aware that the Government has started offering Bachelors in Vocational Training. The government says that as per the AICT norm, if you complete a certificate course which is at the A level, level one and two then post that you can work in the industry. The working hours will be converted into points, which are considered as the hours of learning. Post that the student can again sit for another level, then the certificate which will be received will be equivalent to 12th. There are such certificates in Photography and in Automobile Technician or Automobile Vehicle Testing. The 5 years of training in the industry will be certified as a B-vocational and will be specialized as automobile testing technician. The students can further work in workshops or start their own business. They can earn from Rs. 3 lakh to Rs.50 crore.
What are the top career options in India for students who take up B.Com and BA?
There may be limited career options for such students. Even when they take up jobs, their growth process will be very slow. In order to have more career choices, students should add a Masters qualification to their profile. For example, students can either do a post-graduation in a field of their choice or they can also take up an MBA programme.
When should one start planning his/her future?
A student should ideally start planning their future by Class 10. By class 12, they would know what career they should take up. A lot of people, even when they turn 30, don’t really know what to do about their career. This is because they didn’t care about it when they were young. There comes an age when people just want to earn more money, due to which they don’t have any job satisfaction. Therefore, careful analysis of one's own skills and interests should be done in order to explore the best career options in India available for them to take decisions at the right time.
