The CEO enclave which was held at the Marriott Hotel Jaipur, organised by Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur, Rajasthan had Dr. Giridhar. J. Gyani

Dr. Giridhar. J.Gyani’ Profile:

  • He was the Secretary General, Quality Council of India (2003-2012), an apex national body responsible for establishing and operating national accreditation structure and promoting quality in all walks of life.
  • He was the founder CEO of NABH till 2012 July and has been referred to as the member of the Governing Board.
  • He has recently taken over as the Director General, Association of Healthcare Providers (AHPI), India, educating and advocating for the well being of the common man.

Dr. Gyani’s insights on the Healthcare industry:

  • According to him, this industry is highly fragmented. For example, from the chemical industry saying that whenever, there is an issue the concerned people unite, sit together and keep the issue advocacy with the government while this is something which is not as frequently followed in the healthcare industry as each one acts as a separate entity in itself.
  • So, bringing them together is one of the biggest challenges he has faced till now and will make sure that he will motivate them to unite and work together for a good cause.

About Brand Loyalty for his Association:

  • He mentioned about the stake holders who are the providers, community, government and regulatory bodies. To become a credible association these stake holders (community, government and regulatory bodies) need to see value in him as well as his organisation.
  • Providers will look at him as how effectively he takes up the advocacy issues with the government and gets them the benefit in the best possible way.
  • He quoted few live examples like the Karnataka government reduced their electricity bill which was charged at commercial rates this helped him to take a foot hold in Karnataka as well as Harayana and MP for the same.
  • Secondly he helped reduce the hospital tariff and started the ‘save the doctor campaign’ which resulted in an increase in number of the post graduation seats. This is how he is trying to make AHPI a known brand amongst all.

On Building the Culture in an Organization:

  • One should have clarity on what you are, what you wish to be, how you will perform the activities and what benefit you are going to achieve. By following the above he will be able to empower his association, motivate and encourage his team at every step.
  • A well defined and shared vision between the association, the providers and beneficiaries plays an important role.
  • This also helps the members to take the ownership and pride in what they achieve. He says he follows the recognition system by issuing certificates for the endeavours of his employees. Hence the critical elements according to him are Empowerment, Ownership and Recognition for building up the organization culture.
  • According to him a health association is for the well being of the people, hence prioritising community services to revenues. Never the less he believes that only when there is enough revenue generation the effective services can be provided; hence there is no harm in generating surplus for sustainability.
  • The association being at a nascent stage needs to establish a foot hold, this will gradually be followed by innovation.
  • On asking about the formal process of strategy formulation we were told that the association has a board of governors who meet on a regular basis. A good mix of experts have come together to take up various issues and discuss with the government as well.

On Collaboration:

  • A well collaborated body which works effectively with the government and the society for universal health coverage.
  • Association should be able to add value to its members in terms of risk assessment, infection control, quality and human resource issues. Hence the association becomes a powerful mother body that can address and solve any issues addressed to it.
  • Health for all should become reality in the next five years.

The End Note:

The conversation ended on a very positive note. He not only gave us his bouquet of flowers but also blessed us as well. The informative discussion was not only very educative but also helped us see the world with a new perspective.
