IGNOU Shuts Down 300 Courses And Many Programmes; Leaves Many Students In Lurch

The previous government introduced a whole bunch of new courses by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in order to make education accessible even to the poorest. But the step could not turn as it was expected. In fact, IGNOU has shut down around 300 courses and 250 community colleges in the last two years.

Sources reveal that these steps are being taken in response to information shared by top IGNOU officials with a parliamentary standing panel and the Delhi high court.

The decision has not been taken well by the masses and has left more than a lakh students in wobble as the IGNOU has also hiked its fee.  

If that was not enough IGNOU gave another brunt by suspending 600 MOUs with various institutions. In fact, the educational institution has cancelled courses through 29 partner institutes present in 19 countries and has even shut down most of its on-campus courses.

IGNOU has even closed India’s first sign language research and training centre and discontinued all courses which it offered to disabled students. The institute has even scrapped a convergence scheme which it offered in partnership with its regular courses.

IGNOU is even known to discontinue most chairs as well as special centres it had set up in the northeast along with few programmes offered by Partner Institutions (PIs) including Community Colleges.

The present scenario seems very shadowy let’s see if the new government will take any strong decision.
