“We want to make the process easier for students and want the ministry to set up health camps where students will be checked by a board of doctors. The students will be given disability certificates quickly,” said Nisha Singh, member of the EOC.
The admission process for the disabled students is likely to begin on May 28 and will continue till June 8, Singh said.
During this time the students will have to get themselves registered with the EOC to get admission under the Physically Handicapped quota. The registration will take place only at the office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare. The university has provisions to give admission to 1,600 disabled students each year.
The most important document required for admission to Delhi University through the disability quota is a disability certificate. According to university rules, the candidate should have at at least 40% disability to get admission under this quota.
The lack of a valid disability certificate is the biggest reason for candidates failing to get admission under the quota. “The certificate should not be older than 5 years and should have a recognizable picture of the candidate,” said JM Khurana, dean, students’ welfare.
The EOC had earlier held a three-day workshop for special educators in schools. “The workshop was attended by 300 teachers. We told them about the admission procedure and the requirements. We want to take the number of admissions up this year,” said Singh.
The seats that are offered to disabled students are over and above the total number of seats available in colleges.
No interview for B El Ed course
The Department of Education, Delhi University, has decided to do away with the interviews for those clearing the Bachelors of Elementary Education (B El Ed) entrance test from this year.
The course is offered in eight colleges in the university, including Lady Shri Ram College, Miranda House and Jesus and Mary College.
Students will have to apply for the course through a common application form that can be bought from State Bank of India branches in North Campus, Connaught Place and Gargi College.
These will be available between May 20 and June 4. The entrance test will be held on June 25.
