On 8th June, 2012, Ajay Rathod (name changed), 17, did not rejoice at the fact that he made it to the personal interview round for the Bachelor of Arts course at St. Xavier’s College, Dhobi Talao.

Rathod, who scored 97.70 % in his Class 12 Indian School Certificate (ISC) exams, will give up his seat in the Mumbai College if he gets into a Delhi University (DU) college such as Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) or St. Stephen’s College. The DU first merit list will be declared on June 26.

According to Ajay, “My father is from SRCC and I would like to study commerce there. I have heard that the university atmosphere is amazing in Delhi.”

Other high scorers too seem to be avoiding Mumbai colleges. Kunal Kedia, who scored in 95% in Higher Secondary Certificate exam, plans to keep his admission to BSc course at Ramnarain Ruia College as a back-up. He too wants to head to DU.

Karan Kamath, 18, who scored 97.1% in his ISC exam, has secured admission for engineering in the National University of Singapore. He said, “NUS admits students on the basis of their board results. So it was easy for me."
