Besides being the only state in India that has a literacy rate of 94%, Kerala has achieved another distinction of having the lowest drop-out rate of school students in the country at just 0.53%.
Wayanad has a sizeable scheduled tribes population alone is responsible for the highest overall dropout rate of more than 1%, while in all the other 13 districts the rate was less than 0.5%, shows an economic review report by the State Planning Board (SPB) released on March 14, 2013. The latest report shows that currently there are 12,644 schools in Kerala of which 4,620 are government-run, 7,161 are aided schools and 863 are non-aided schools.
On the flip side, there has been a decline in the number of enrolments of students by 6.0% compared to 2012 with 39.86 lakhs. This decline has been attributed to low birth rate in the state. Not just at the primary school level, the pass percentage of students in the higher secondary courses was 88% in 2011- 2012, up by 82% as compared to 2010 – 2011.
Finance Minister KM Mani announced to set aside Rs 581 crore for improving the quality of school infrastructure, and academic and student-centric programmes in his presentation of the State budget.
The State Planning Board, however, cautioned that the state needs to focus on second generation reforms to ensure that higher education is attuned to the global employment opportunities and not be complacent of the state’s achievements.
