Assam University organized the 12th convocation on 6th March, 2012 in Netaji Manch within the campus. Chief Rector Shri Janaki Ballav Patnaik, Governor of Assam, chief guest Narendra Yadav, Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma, Prof. Kaushik Basu, Prof. Barid Baran Bhattacherjee, Prof Hasan Azizul Haq and Prof. Soumendranath Bandopadhayay were present at the convocation programme.

Honoris Causa
 

  • Prof. Soumendranath Bandyopadhyay is a retired professor of Bengali of Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan. He had an illustrious career as teacher of Bengali in Vidyasagar College, Kolkata and Visva Bharati. He has also been the Director, Nippon Bhavan, centre for Indo-Japan Cultures Relations and Exchange during 1994-98. He was awarded Degree of Doctor of Literature by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor  of Assam University.
  • Prof. Kaushik Basu is a chief economic adviser, ministry of Finance, Government of India. He was given the Degree of Doctor of Literature by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor  of Assam University.
  • Prof. Hasan Azizul Haq is one of the noted litterateurs of Bangladesh. He was given the Degree of Doctor of Literature by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor of Assam University.
  • Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami popularly known as Mamoni Baideo among the Assamese people was an Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer. She was the degree of Doctor of Literature posthumously by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor of Assam University. Her degree has taken by her cousin brother on her behalf.
  • Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma is a Hon. Professor, centre for advanced study in Cell and Chromosome Research, Botany Department, Calcutta University. He was given the degree of Doctor of Science by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor of Assam University.
  • Prof. Barid Baran Bhattacharya is an eminent economist and educationist from India. He was V.C of Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was given the degree of Doctor of Literature by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor of Assam University.
  • Shri Pranab Mukherjee was conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature by Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice Chancellor of Assam University. His elder brother Pijush Mukherjee accepted the award on his behalf.
  • In the convocation, Prof. Narendra Yadav, distinguished member of the Planning Commission, Government of India said that with the passing of age, in the field job, new changes have taken place. Step by step, India is reaching its development. And today’s students can choose according to their own choices. He also cited 9 principles for students for achieving their high goals.


Chief Rector J.B. Patnaik, Governor of Assam said that “The national knowledge commission believes that by 2015 India should attain a Gross Enrolment Ratio of at least 15 percentages if we are in line with most modern societies. But the picture today is almost 2/3rd of our universities and 90 percentages of our colleges are rated as below average on quality parameters and most importantly there is a nagging fear that university curriculum  are not synchronized with employment needs. Priority should be given to enroll women on a large scale from the school to the university level. Women education should not only be free upto the university education but a large number of scholarship be reserved for women at all levels of education”.

Lastly, the Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. Tapodhir  Bhattacharjee delivered his lectures. He said “Assam University is progressing in every field day by day. We are now finalizing our 12th plan proposal for further expansion and consolidation in all realms of human endeavour. Our efforts have been recognized through India Today – Nielson – 2011 survey which has ranked Assam University at forty-first position out of 539 Universities in this country. The university has indeed entered into the phase of maturity in its 19th year of establishment. Along with national seminars and symposia, international seminars and conferences have of late become regular events in our University. As we have signed Memorandum of Understanding recently with five leading Universities of Bangladesh, International academic collaboration has become a reality”.

The event was launched by singing the National Anthem and university song. After that, the chief guest offered certificates to the best students of various departments of 2010-2011. A total 33 students got the gold medal in this 12th Convocation ceremony. Besides this, 85 students got merit prizes and 30 students got endowment prizes.

More than 750 students received their degree with certificates by Assam University in this 12th Convocation ceremony. The Deans of various schools and university and principals of colleges along with Prof. Pro Vice Chancellor G.D.Sharma, Gopaljee Mishra and Bholeshsar  Mathe, Registrar Prof. Niranjan Roy and controller of examination Dr. P Devnath were also present at the event.
